Weighted GPA

Definition

A GPA calculation that assigns additional grade point value to grades earned in more rigorous courses such as AP, IB, honors, or dual enrollment classes. A typical weighted scale adds 0.5 points for honors courses and 1.0 point for AP/IB courses, so an 'A' in an AP course earns 5.0 points rather than 4.0. Weighted GPAs allow colleges to see that a student challenged themselves academically but can make GPA comparisons across schools difficult.
